Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

Flaky crescent dough, a creamy Oreo center, and a snowy dusting of powdered sugar make these Coal in the Snow Cookies a fun and festive holiday surprise—especially when served warm.

Coal In The Snow Cookies on a plate with glass of milk in back

Coal in the Snow Cookies are the perfect last-minute holiday treat with a fun surprise inside. Reminiscent of deep-fried Oreos you’d find at the fair, these easy cookies use just 4 ingredients and come together fast. When served warm, the crescent dough bakes up flaky and golden, while the Oreo inside turns soft, creamy, and melty. They’re simple, playful, and always a hit on a Christmas cookie tray.

Why You’ll Love These Coal in the Snow Cookies

  • Just 4 ingredients – Crescent rolls, Oreos, milk, and powdered sugar create a festive cookie with almost no prep.

  • Quick and easy – These cookies come together in about 20 minutes, making them perfect for last-minute holiday baking.

  • Great texture contrast – The crescent dough bakes up flaky and golden, while the Oreo inside turns soft and creamy.

  • Fun holiday look – A light dusting of powdered sugar creates the “snow,” while the hidden Oreo delivers the “coal.”

  • Perfect for sharing – These cookies are easy to transport and always stand out on a cookie tray.

Start with a can of 8-count crescent rolls. Don’t unroll them, just slice them into 16 equal pieces. Oreos get quickly dunked in milk then wrapped in the crescent dough. Bake until golden, only 10-11 minutes.

Straight out of the oven, sprinkle them with powdered sugar and serve. If you want to get really creative, you could make a powdered sugar glaze rather than dusting. Either way, serving Coal In The Snow at the holiday gathering will be a treat not soon forgotten.

Ingredients

  • 1 can 8-count crescent rolls
  • 8 Oreo cookies
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375ºF.
  • Slice the cylinder of 8 crescent roll dough into 16 pieces.
  • Flatten each disk gently to make a circle a little larger than an oreo.
  • Dunk an Oreo in the milk very quickly so it doesn't get soggy. Place on a crescent roll circle. Press another circle of dough on top and pinch the layers together to seal the Oreo inside.
  • Repeat with each Oreo. Place Oreos on a parchment lined baking sheet, and bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and immediately dust with powdered sugar.
  • Serve immediately if possible, but the cookies will keep for 24 hours in air tight container after cooling.
