Jump to Recipe - Print Recipe

This easy homemade poppy seed dressing is light, fresh, and perfect for strawberry salads, spinach salads, grilled chicken salads, and more.

Easy homemade poppy seed dressing in jar with wooden spoon.

I’ve tested a lot of poppy seed dressings over the years, and many of them end up too sweet or too heavy. This version stays fresh and balanced with white wine vinegar, a little orange juice, poppy seeds, and just enough mayonnaise to give it a smooth, lightly creamy texture. It’s perfect for strawberry salads, spinach salads, and summer salads.

Why You’ll Love This Poppy Seed Dressing

  • Light and fresh instead of overly heavy
  • Quick and easy to make in minutes
  • Perfect for strawberry and spinach salads
  • Lightly creamy without feeling heavy
  • Better tasting than bottled dressing
  • Keeps well in the refrigerator

If you’re looking for the perfect summer salad to pair with this dressing, try my Strawberry Chicken Salad. This light poppy seed dressing complements the sweet strawberries, juicy chicken, creamy cheese, and crunchy candied nuts beautifully while keeping the salad fresh and balanced.

Ingredients in Poppy Seed Dressing

White Wine Vinegar

White wine vinegar gives this dressing a bright, fresh flavor that pairs perfectly with fruit and greens. Rice wine vinegar also works well for a slightly milder finish.

Orange Juice

A small amount of fresh orange juice brightens the dressing without making it overly sweet or citrusy.

Dijon Mustard

Dijon mustard adds subtle flavor and helps emulsify the dressing for a smooth texture.

Onion Powder

A tiny amount of onion powder adds savory depth while keeping the recipe quick and easy.

Light Olive Oil and Avocado Oil

Using a combination of light olive oil and avocado oil keeps the dressing fresh and balanced without overpowering delicate ingredients like fruit and greens.

Poppy Seeds

Classic poppy seeds add texture and the signature flavor that makes this dressing so good.

Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise adds a subtle creamy texture while still keeping the dressing light and fresh.

How To Make Easy Homemade Poppy Seed Dressing

  1. Add the vinegar, orange juice, mayonnaise, sugar, Dijon mustard, onion powder, salt, and pepper to a bowl or jar and whisk until smooth.
  2. Slowly whisk in the light olive oil and avocado oil until the dressing is fully combined and lightly creamy.
  3. Stir in the poppy seeds and taste to adjust seasoning if needed.
  4. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Shake or whisk again before serving since homemade dressing naturally separates.

My favorite way to mix and store dressings like this that just need to be shaken and poured is in a mason jar like this one with a lid. Just store in the refrigerator until needed, give a quick shake and it’s good to go.
